Call it the reorganization within the reorganization.
Motorola Inc., which last month announced a major corporate restructuring, is further realigning departments within its Broadband Communications Sector unit under two main umbrellas. One will focus on data and Internet related business, the other on digital cable and the North American digital cable market specifically.
While not an earth-shattering realignment at a company that seems to restructure almost annually, the shift is akin to moving related departments onto the same office floor so they can coordinate products and sales efforts, according to Dave Robinson, president of the Broadband Communications Sector.
"It's putting strategic glue in place to cement the broadband triple play," he says. "Our key strategy in the market is to provide the video, the high-speed data and the voice, particularly IP voice."
The Internet-focused IP Systems Group umbrella will include the Internet Protocol Network Systems unit, which will handle cable modem, North American telephony, international telephony and network infrastructure products; and the Transmission Network Systems unit, which will handle hybrid fiber coax equipment and services related to voice, video and data communications. The group will be headed by senior vice president and general manager Dan Moloney.
The Entertainment Systems Group umbrella will ride herd on the company's video products, include the satellite and broadcast network systems business unit, the worldwide interactive systems unit and DigiCable, a unit focusing specifically on the North American digital cable market. That umbrella will be headed up by Robinson in addition to his duties as chief of the Broadband Communications Sector.
Grouping the units together under general umbrellas will help not only existing sales but also future product development, Robinson says.
"It allows the product groups to better put proposals together--so they are not just stapled together," he says. "Secondly, it allows the product groups to better do strategic planning for new products."
