Telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks continues
to push forward in the wireless sector. The latest: Nortel has
two contracts, one in the United States, and one in China.
Over a five year period, Nortel will supply its CDMA2000 1X radio
and packet core switching equipment to 3,500 base stations and
related switching infrastructure to U.S. Cellular. The deal will
enable U.S. Cellular to deliver next-generation data services.
In China, China Mobile has tabbed Nortel to expand its GSM mobile
network in Hebei province. The expansion will enable China Mobile
serve 322,000 more customers in the province.
Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.
These deals build on Nortel's momentum in the wireless sector.
Other deals recently announced by Nortel include: a deal to supply
its CDMA2000 1X wireless technology to connect PT Radio Telepon
Indonesia's customers to a public switched telephone network;
a 10-year frame agreement with T-Mobile for UMTS networks across
Europe; a two-year CDMA-2000 3G contract from Israel's Pelephone;
and a supply deal with mm02 for 2.5G and 3G equipment and services
across its networks in the U.K., Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands.
