IBM, Inktomi team for business

Looking beyond e-mail in the business sector, Big Blue and Inktomi Corp. have partnered to provide web-accelerating, streaming and rich media services to enterprises.

IBM Corp.'s Digital Media Group is teaming with the software provider to deliver enterprise content delivery network technology to businesses. eCDNs capabilities include caching, content delivery, publishing and management technologies. Specifically, the IBM-Inktomi solution provides applications such as enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, content management, enterprise portal and streaming media.

With IBM's Digital Media Group, customers can leverage Inktomi technology running on IBM's eServer xSeries systems to help overcome network congestion without adding expensive bandwidth and difficult to manage router upgrades, says IBM. Inktomi's content networking products running over IBM's eServer xSeries systems include Traffic Edge, Traffic Core, Traffic Controller and Content Delivery Suite.

By 2006, 80 percent of Global 2000 enterprises are expected to have implemented private content delivery networks to deliver video-on-demand and other rich-media content to branch offices, according to research firm Gartner Inc.

In March, IBM unveiled Digital Media Factory, a division that offers standards-based technology and services to help digital content owners manage, store, protect and distribute their new media assets.
