Broadcom Revs On Revenues
Broadband chipmaker provider Broadcom
got a boost on Wall Street today jumping $16.00 to $225.38 as of 12:36 p.m.
EST, following its record revenue announcement for the third quarter. The
company posted $319.2 million in revenues, a 128.7 percent increase over the
$139.6 million reported in Q3 1999.
Broadcom has spent most of 2000 swallowing up companies to strengthen
its presence in the broadband market, and its net income loss was reflective
of that. The loss was $19.4 million, or 9 cents a share, compared to net
income of $24.6 million, or 10 cents a share during the same period a year
ago. Acquisitions announced during the third quarter, include silicon
solutions provider Altima Communications,
optical
communications chipmaker NewPort
Communications and semiconductor company Silicon
Spice.
The company is not skipping a beat in the fourth quarter
either, announcing the acquisition of switching technology chip maker Allayer
Communications just yesterday.

Excite Radios For Subscribers
Mass-market appeal for high-speed cable Internet access is
what Excite@Home is after, and the
company believes a deal with RadioShack
Corp. is a step in the right direction. In an effort to attract
additional @Home subscribers, Excite@Home's QuickStart self-install kits and
cable modems will be available at RadioShack retail stores within the
broadband provider's footprint.
Excite@Home released the self-install broadband access kit,
which includes CD-ROM software for both PCs and Macintoshes, on Tuesday.
RadioShack is connecting with Excite@Home to position itself
as a broadband access supplier. "Our business strategy is to
become America's Home Connectivity Store, and our agreement with Excite@Home
will be an integral part...by virtue of the company's broadband
footprint," says Leonard Roberts, president and CEO of RadioShack.

BellSouth Rings In Q3
Strong growth in the data and wireless markets led BellSouth
to a 10 percent jump in earnings for the third quarter. Earnings per share
rose to $1.04 billion, or 55 cents a share, compared to $951 million, or 50
cents a share during the same period a year ago.
In the high-speed service arena, BellSouth also reported
growth. By the end of the quarter, the company was reporting 134,000
subscribers to its high-speed Internet access services, including DSL, up
from 74,000 at the end of the second quarter. BellSouth expects to reach
200,000 subscribers by year's end.

TW Responds To AT&T
AT&T Corp. asked the Federal
Communications Commission for an extension to sell its stake in Time
Warner Entertainment, siting unsuccessful negotiations, but Time
Warner has fired back in a letter to the FCC. The letter stated that
AT&T's accounts are "simply untrue," and AT&T has three
options: It could sell the TWE interest to a third party, sell it to TW or
engage in a stock offering.
The tone of the overall letter was that both companies were
engaged in constructive dialogue and that there is no need for the
government to get involved in the arrangements. AT&T could not be
reached for comment. The FCC mandated that AT&T relinquish its interest
in TWE as a condition of its approval of AT&T purchase of MediaOne in
June.
In other TW news, Gerald Levin, Time Warner chairman, said
its $135 billion deal with America Online
is in the "homestretch." He is confident that the merger will be
completed this fall, as originally planned.
