Comcast Opens Pipes To Juno

Following in the footsteps of AT&T Corp. and other large MSOs, Comcast Cable Communications has opened its network to a competing ISP and plans to let Juno Online Services use its network. Juno will be able to access Comcast's pipes to offer high-speed Web surfing to its customers. The deal is expected to be announced today at the Western Show in L.A.

The trial is expected to begin in 1Q 2001.

AT&T has bowed to pressure to open its networks and is testing several ISPs in trials in Colorado, of which Juno is one. The magnanimous move on AT&Ts part could be to help ease its relationship with the FCC as it plans to spin off Liberty Media and break itself into quarters.

In addition, America Online and Time Warner have agreed to open their cable networks to competing ISPs. Time Warner recently agreed to let EarthLink use its cable systems for high-speed Net access for a fee and may also be in talks with Juno for a similar agreement.
